In the impoverished Eastern Cape region, R500 million in foreign revenue is generated in the squid fishery every year; making it one of the countryâs most valuable fisheries. The actual annual catch is about 17 000 t of high-value species. The apportionment for the recreational ï¬shing subsector remains unchanged at four west coast rock lobsters per person per day for the duration of the ï¬shing season. Government has expanded the mandate for ï¬sheries management by adding fresh water and inland ï¬sheries, as well as aquaculture, to the department's existing responsibilities.
